We ran 83 Twin Cities businesses that rank on Google through Google's speed test. The average scored 50 out of 100.

We looked at 83 independent Twin Cities businesses that rank on page one of Google for their core “[service] Minneapolis” search, across 16 industries. These are not struggling companies. They are the ones already winning the visibility everyone else fights for. Then we ran each one through Google’s own PageSpeed Insights test and checked the fundamentals that turn a visitor into a customer. The average site scored 50 out of 100 on mobile speed. The median site takes 9.4 seconds to load its main content on a phone. And 1 in 5 have no tap-to-call button and no analytics at all. The basics everyone worried about a decade ago (HTTPS, mobile-friendliness) are handled almost everywhere now. The gap has moved to the things that quietly cost calls and customers.

What we did

We pulled the top-ranking businesses for 16 common service searches in Minneapolis: HVAC, plumbing, roofing, chiropractic, dental, landscaping, electrical, med spa, auto repair, restaurants, gyms, hair salons, law firms, coffee shops, pest control, and veterinary. We filtered out directories, national chains, and aggregators, leaving 83 independent Twin Cities businesses that Google already rewards with page-one rankings.

Then we ran two tests on each one. First, Google PageSpeed Insights on mobile, the same Lighthouse test Google publishes and uses as a ranking input. Second, a programmatic check of the fundamentals: tap-to-call, on-page SEO basics, analytics, and page weight. Every check is objective and reproducible.

Finding 1: The average site scores 50 out of 100 on Google’s own mobile speed test.

Across the 75 sites that returned a valid score, the median mobile PageSpeed score was 50 out of 100, and the average was 53. Google color-codes these: green (90+) is good, orange is “needs improvement,” and red (under 50) is “poor.”

48% scored in the red “poor” zone. Only 3% scored green “good,” which means 97% of these ranking businesses miss Google’s own bar for a fast mobile site. And the median Largest Contentful Paint was 9.4 seconds. That is how long the main content takes to appear on a phone. Google’s “good” threshold is under 2.5 seconds. The typical Twin Cities business is nearly four times slower than that.

Finding 2: The trades have the slowest sites.

Speed was not even across industries. The home-service trades, the businesses that live or die by the phone ringing, had the worst mobile scores. Plumbers came in at a median of 40 out of 100, roofers at 45, auto repair at 46. Gyms (65) and chiropractors (64) were the fastest.

The pattern is clear: image-heavy trade sites built years ago are the slowest, and they are often the businesses where a fast, tappable phone number matters most.

Finding 3: 1 in 5 make you copy their phone number.

20% of these businesses had no tap-to-call link. On a phone, that means a customer has to memorize or copy your number instead of tapping it. For an HVAC company, a plumber, or a dentist, the phone call is the sale, and 1 in 5 are adding friction to the single most valuable action on the page.

The fix is small: make every phone number a tel: link. It turns a number into a button in about five minutes.

For a home-service business, the phone call is the sale. Nearly 1 in 5 of these sites make a mobile customer copy the number by hand instead of tapping it.

Finding 4: 1 in 5 are flying blind.

20% had no analytics installed at all. No Google Analytics, no Tag Manager, nothing. These businesses genuinely cannot tell you how many people visited last month, what they looked at, or which marketing drove calls. They are making decisions on vibes.

The fix: install analytics, then track conversions so calls and form fills are counted. You cannot improve what you cannot see.

Finding 5: Half are leaving rankings on the table with weak titles and bloated pages.

The title tag is still one of the highest-leverage things on a page for rankings and click-through. 51% of these sites had titles outside the useful 30-to-60-character range. Too short to say anything, or so long Google cuts them off. Some were just the business name, with no service or city at all.

On top of that, 53% shipped a homepage over 150KB of raw code before a single image loaded, which is a big part of why the speed scores are what they are.

Finding 6: The old basics are now table stakes.

Here is the encouraging part, and it reframes the whole thing. Around 100% of these sites had HTTPS. 96% had a mobile viewport tag and a meta description. Every site had a title tag of some kind.

Ten years ago those were the differentiators. Today they are the floor. Which is exactly why the next layer (real speed, tap-to-call, measurement, on-page SEO) is where customers are now being won or lost.

What this means for a Twin Cities business

If you already rank, you have done the hard part. But ranking gets someone to your site. It does not get them to call. The businesses pulling ahead are not the ones with the prettiest homepages. They are the ones that load fast, make it a single tap to reach a human, and actually measure what happens next.

Almost every problem on this list is a fix measured in hours, not months. A compressed hero image, a tel: link, an analytics tag, a rewritten title. None of it requires a rebuild. It requires someone to look.

If you want to know where your own site stands on these exact checks, that is what we do. A free 15-minute audit will show you your real mobile speed score, your missing tap-to-call, your title tags, and what it is costing you, with no obligation to fix any of it with us.

Methodology: 83 independent Twin Cities businesses ranking on page one of Google for 16 “[service] Minneapolis” searches, collected July 2026. Mobile speed measured via Google PageSpeed Insights (Lighthouse, mobile strategy); 75 of the 83 returned a valid score. Each homepage was also fetched and checked programmatically for HTTPS, mobile viewport, structured data, title and meta tags, H1 headings, tap-to-call links, analytics, and page weight. Directories, national chains, and aggregators were excluded.
